This type of app has been around for a long time, I remember using Liveperson over 10 years ago for one of my sites, there have been a few others such as Olark but generally its been a quiet market, probably not the most sexy space but having used a few they are great for customer conversions.
The concept is good, but I can’t help but think its a bit crowded however according to the counter on their site they have 165,000 users, even if only 5% of them are paying customers they are probably close to being self funding.
Funny thing about these small business web App markets, everyone thinks they are old hat and saturated but you have to remember that many of the worlds hundreds of millions of businesses have only just put their businesses online, most of them have no clue about how to optimise their website for conversion. Its a very easy sell to put a chat box on your site, almost no cost and the effect it has on conversions is in my experience significant and the target market is easy to monetise if you can show value.
